Day of the Dead: Honoring a beloved Mexican National Holiday with Food, Drinks, and Music

Through our travels to Mexico over the years, my wife Geri and I gained an appreciation and love for the profound meaning behind Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Our friends in Mexico have passionately shared its cultural significance, revealing the depth of this cherished tradition in Mexican culture.

Embracing the vibrant spirit of this joyful tradition, Música Tequila honors Día de los Muertos and its celebration of life.  With its blend of traditional and natural ingredients, respect for the Mexican culture and a passion for music, Música perfectly complements this cultural festivity celebrated on November 1st and 2nd.

We are profoundly moved by the rich tradition and culture of the celebration, where it’s believed the souls of the departed return to visit their living loved ones. As grandparents, we’ve had the joy of experiencing Día de los Muertos first hand by watching the movie Coco with our grandchildren, deepening our appreciation for its joy and meaning.

day of the dead traditions

One of the beautiful aspects of  Día de los Muertos is that it is a celebration rather than a day of sorrow. It honors life by acknowledging death. Families honor their deceased loved ones by visiting their graves, while communities come alive with vibrant festivals, parties and parades, all play a part of the annual ritual commemorating life and embracing death.

At Música Tequila, we are deeply moved by the rich meaning behind Día de los Muertos. With every bottle we craft, we invite you to celebrate this tradition with us — honoring your ancestors, cherishing their memory, favorite music and beverage, embracing the joy they brought into your life.

Geri adds “We celebrate this tradition not only by raising a glass but by encouraging togetherness, remembrance, and the shared joy of honoring those who came before us. Sometimes we may not have the right words to express this cherished tradition but we have music, food and beverages to convey its meaning.  This celebration helps us connect  and share our feelings.”

Below are just some of the things we have learned about Día de los Muertos:

Día de los Muertos is not a Mexican Halloween.

Halloween is a secular holiday celebrated in the US and other Western countries. Halloween holiday has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a pagan religious celebration to welcome the harvest at the end of summer, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

Día de los Muertos, a religious observance rooted in Mexico, is about honoring the spirits of departed loved ones and to celebrate life.

Ofrendas

As part of Dia de los Muertos celebrations, departed loved ones are remembered through food, beverage, song, and the building of intricate and ornate altars called ofrendas.

ofrenda

At the heart of the celebration are home altars that feature gifts and “ofrendas,” or offerings, such as marigold flowers, sugar skulls, and candles. These brightly decorated altars are meant to guide the souls of the departed back to their families. Loved ones also place treasures, photographs, mementos, favorite foods and drinks, such as  a shot of tequila — on these ofrendas to honor the deceased.

Calaveras, particularly sugar skulls, are commonly placed on ofrendas to symbolize death and rebirth. In Indigenous cultures, the calavera holds deep significance as a representation of the underworld. These decorative candies are also given out as treats.

La Catrina

La Catrina is one of the most recognizable figures of Day of the Dead, a towering female skeleton with vibrant make up and a flamboyant feathery hat. However b she was not the first! Mictēcacihuātl – the queen of the Aztec underworld of Chicunamictlan was the central figure for anyone who passed on in the Aztec culture. La Catrina is the inspiration behind the sugar skull makeup and costumes worn to celebrate the holiday.
